Elko is 3D branded which means he comes from the original
herds that started the curly breed in Nevada and is a
foundation curly stallion.
Elko, foaled in 1990 was by Baha-Toiya.D (by Ruby Red King)
and is out of a Damele mare also sired by Ruby Red King out
of a Peacock D* daughter from a range mare.
It is really unknown how many foals Elko has sired but his
offspring have competed in eventing, dressage, and show
jumping, with many stating he is a sire of great
significance. Many of Elko Nevada's offspring can be found
producing foals for many curly breeders around the world,
Germany, France, Sweden to name a few. We do estimate at
least 52 foals have been recorded sired by him and this
number could very well be higher.
We have a Face Book group dedicated to Elko Nevada* and all
horses who carry his name in their pedigree. It is Elko
Nevada* Curly Stallion .
We wish to thank Kim Hughes of DKH Irish Sport Horses for
letting us have this historically bred, Foundation Curly
stallion. He will be bred to a few Purebred and Partbred
Iberian mares and most of these foals will be offered for
sale.
The Curly Horse is documented among wild horses of the North
American west, since the 1700's. It has survived centuries
of evolution, resulting its efficient size, strong boned
legs, thick walled hooves, although not very correct in
conformation.
The Dameles', a Nevada ranching family, were the first to
use and breed the Curlies in the 1930s. They bred Curlies
with their ranch horses, and then with an Arabian stallion,
Nevada Red, and a Morgan stallion, Ruby Red King. The Curly
coat often came through on the cross-bred foals, coupled
with the wild Curly characteristics, but with the calm,
intelligent, easily trainable temperament; friendly
personality, strength, and stamina, from the out cross to
domesticated horses used (stallions) The Damele`s herd was
reduced to but a few mares & a colt during a severe storm in
the 1950`s. To continue breeding these hardy horses, it was
necessary to cross breed them to other breeds. Each breeder
had his own idea of what other breed to cross with the
Curly. All of our Curlies pedigrees read like a Who`s Who of
Arabian (Nevada Red), Morgan (Ruby Red King), Quarter Horse
(Hard Twist, Peter McQue, Oklahoma Star) breeds!
Crossing with the domesticated lines was a great thing as
the Curly haired horses were harder to break and calm down.
Often leg roped, tripped and tied till the horses gave
up so they could be approached. Benny Damele, in one
You-tube video talked about the difficulty of breaking
Elko`s sire due to his Curly temperament. One day he would
be good and the next "he just might kill you." This was
edited out on the video. Great care must be given in
crossing the Curly horses due to this. Imprinting at birth
is also very much a must if selection for temperament is
over looked for the Curly coat.
It was in 1961 that the Curly breed was to get the greatest
contribution ever. It was in the form of Nevada Red, an
Arabian stallion bred by Susanne Swanson of California. She
and the Dameles were long time friends and in that year she
stated that if she had another Arabian colt born, she was
going to put him in the freezer. Mrs. Damele told her if the
foal was a stud-horse instead of a filly, she would fill her
freezer full of beef in trade for him. So Nevada Red became
a part of the Damele herd and he remained a great influence
in it until his death in 1981. Nevada Red was of high %
Crabbet breeding with multiple crosses to Abu Farwa, not to
mention Skowronek (one of the greatest little horses in
Arabian history who`s name can be found in some of the most
successful Arabian race and show horses, not to mention
ranch horses in Russia, Poland, England, and of course North
America and Mexico.)
We credit the wonderful temperament of Elko and the foals we
have first hand experience with, to Elko`s half Morgan and
1/8th "Old" Arabian breeding.
All of Elko`s foals can be papered with the International
Curly Horse Organization, weather Curly coated or Smooth
Coated. Only a very few select outside mares will be
excepted for live cover or AI.
DISCLAIMER. IF YOU HAVE HORSE ALLERGIES YOU MAY OR MAY NOT
BE ALLERGIC TO CURLY HORSES, CURLY OR SMOOTH COATED. IF YOU
VISIT A CURLY FARM MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR MEDICATION WITH
YOU. MANY TIMES, BUT NOT ALL, IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO HORSES
YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE SAME DEGREE OF ALLERGIC REACTION WITH A
CURLY BRED HORSE. BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU GO TO SEE A CURLY
HORSE THAT HAS JUST BEEN BATHED (at home or at a show or
breed demo) AS WHAT WOULD NORMALLY MAKE YOU SUFFER ALLERGIC
REACTIONS TO HORSES MAY BE MASKED OR "WASHED" AWAY.
Our son Olie has been tested to be very ALLERGIC TO HORSES
but has shown no reaction to a few of our other horses of
different breeds and has shown no reaction yet to our
"Curly" mares.
Again, PLEASE NOTE: being HYPO-ALLERGIC does NOT GUARANTEE
you will NOT have any type of Allergic reaction to a Curly
horse. It lessens, or decreases, the Possibility of a
reaction, but being Curly, in the form of a Curly or Smooth
Coated does not Guarantee it. PLEASE take your medications
with you when visiting any Curly farm.
